IMPRESSIONS...

Barbara is a producer of documentary films Pegase Productions in Lille. For some time she has been following the adventures of a small colony of Harbour Seals which have settled north of Calais, as well as the people protecting them, in order to make a film about them :
«I wanted to talk about seals, but above all the hopes and the pressure that their presence has created in the area.
For some, hopes of the reintroduction of a species exterminated along the coast, and the beginning of a change of mentality of inhabitants concerning the environment. For others, the worry of losing natural land to hunting or industry, if the defenders of the environment became strong.
However, I wanted to avoid a controversial film and conserve an element of freshness. To present it through
the eyes of children in the region who were also discovering this event, seemed to me to be an interesting idea.
When I met them I was immediately hooked ! I was lucky to meet a teacher and Head Teacher of a school who were open, mativated and dynamic. Very quickly we were able to get down to work.

Marie-Christine, class teacher C.M.1 (Year 4 in U.K.) at St Anne's school has experienced an exceptionnal school year :

«Barbara met me at school and explained the different aspects of filming she wanted to do with the children.
At this time of the year, I knew the children very well and I was sure of their enthusiasm in participating in the documentary film project on the seals.
On my part, I was conviced of the importance and educational interest that the film would have on the children's classwork.
It is, in effect, real work in scientitific research, geography and the awareness of environmental education, indispensible in building the personality of each child taking part in every aspect of filming.
A number of shy children overshadowed in class have revealed a lot of dynamism and ease in group activities.
After a moment's apprehension, the camera and the sound boom were quickly forgotten and the children were passionate in their research (pollution, food chain, Internet).
It was interesting for me to notice that the children with difficulties or lacking interest in basic school subjects blossomed during the film outings and found pleasure in learning outside the confines of the classroom. These activities greatly encouraged moments of exchange of ideas, communication and discussion between the students.
Once during filming Alexis said to me : «I don't like school much. But I like filming with Barbara a lot !
When I know that she is coming into school I am really happy to go to school.».
Without realising it the days working in activity groups became important to him.
What's more, confidence was built between the children and me during the filming and in this air of confidence teaching can take its rightful place.

Thérèse, Head Teacher, supported the project :
«Behind the superb film images, there were hours and hours of preparation needed. The hours of work allowed us teachers to work on numerous abilities as well as the spoken and written word : talking, explaining things correctly, listening to the others pupils which is not always easy to do. The children worked on the reading of documents,
maps, etc...
The filming allowed the children to become aware of the need to respect and protect the environment.
